William Slim on constrained command in Burma

William Slim's Defeat into Victory introduces a capable but contentious commander whose Burma campaign suffered from low strategic priority and exceptionally limited support.

Notes

Slim was a successful wartime commander whose later comments remain contentious. His Burma campaign sat beneath the Allied Europe-first priority, while Admiral Ernest King pressed the United States to devote more effort to the Pacific. British strategy gave Burma no advocate with comparable influence, leaving Slim to operate with exceptionally limited support. Mountbatten's appointment as supreme commander added another difficult higher-level relationship. Command here means making decisions with scarce resources and little leverage over strategic priorities.
