Why towing Pola home was not worth the risk

A Cape Matapan question shows how ammunition, spare parts, towing, and air attack could turn a captured cruiser into a liability.

Question

Why did the Royal Navy not try to capture the cruiser Pola after Cape Matapan?

Short answer

Getting her home was risky and slow, while incompatible ammunition and spare parts meant she would have been little more than a trophy.

Notes

British destroyers considered taking the disabled Italian cruiser Pola, but Cunningham rejected the idea. Towing her home would slow the force and expose it to further air attack. Even after arrival, the Royal Navy lacked the correct ammunition and spare parts to operate the ship economically. Pola would therefore have been an impressive trophy but a poor return for the operational risk and logistical burden.
