Why do many accounts seem to forget the U-boat campaign after 1943?
Short answerThe campaign continued, but stronger escorts and anti-submarine warfare made the later phase less dramatic and shifted attention away from the smaller ships doing the work.
NotesThe U-boat campaign continued into 1944, when some of the largest wolfpacks still assembled and hard fighting remained. What changed was the Allied system: numerous escorts, improved anti-submarine weapons, and experienced smaller combatants began destroying U-boats with much greater regularity. That later phase is less compatible with a suspenseful story of an Atlantic crisis balanced on a knife edge. Histories centred on cruisers, battleships, and carriers can also marginalise the destroyers, sloops, frigates, corvettes, and motor craft that made the convoy system work. Where an author's narrative stops can determine which ships disappear when the strategic tide turns.
