Why tanks still matter beside air and naval fire support

Rules of engagement and obstructed targets preserve a role for armour alongside aircraft and naval guns.

Question

Why retain tanks when aircraft or ships can deliver heavy fire support?

Short answer

Infantry still needs protected firepower when a target cannot be seen or rules of engagement prevent remote fire support from being used.

Notes

Air support and artillery, whether sea- or land-based, add to a balanced force. A medium-weight force can simplify logistics by using a common vehicle family, but infantry still needs supporting firepower and armour. Rules of engagement can prevent firing into a building or calling artillery onto civilians. A scene in Band of Brothers illustrates an officer declining to fire at a target he cannot see, though its historical accuracy is left uncertain. Sending a Javelin team closer is another option, although that puts the infantry team in a difficult position.
