Why taking a few topmen could cripple a merchant crew

The practical damage attributed to whole-crew impressment may instead reflect the removal of a small number of scarce, highly skilled topmen.

Notes

Reports that merchant ships became nearly helpless after British intervention may have a narrower practical explanation. A warship seeking useful sailors had the strongest incentive to take topmen, the experienced hands able to work high in the rig. Merchant captains might carry only a few because those specialists commanded higher pay. Removing that small group could cause disruption out of proportion to the headcount, preserving the grievance while challenging the claim that entire crews were routinely seized.
