Why Sweden shifted from destroyers to sea denial

Småland and Östergötland remained useful into the 1980s, but Sweden decided that an outnumbered navy should put scarce resources into sea denial instead of independent sea control.

Notes

These were Sweden's last destroyers because the strategic calculation changed, not because the ships suddenly ceased to be useful. Småland remained in service until 1984, while Östergötland left in 1982. Their long careers show that Sweden could keep capable surface combatants viable for decades. The harder question was whether a smaller navy could contest sea control alone against the regional threat. Sweden concentrated its resources on a sea-denial force that could impose costs and deny an adversary victory. The decision followed relative strength and mission priorities rather than a general belief that destroyers were obsolete.
