Why did Russian pressure on the Ottoman Empire matter if it did not directly threaten India?
Short answerIt moved Russian power closer to the straits, Suez, India, and important overland trade routes, creating room for further expansion.
NotesThe concern was not that a Russian army at the Ottoman frontier had already reached India. Each advance brought Russian influence closer to the Dardanelles, the eastern Mediterranean, Suez, and the routes connecting Britain with India. Sea routes around the world were increasingly important, but substantial overland movement of goods still mattered. British policy therefore treated Ottoman territory as strategic depth whose loss could enable further Russian advances.
