Of the 195 scuttled boats counted here, 184 were home boats. The eleven front boats had already been damaged while trying to pass Allied forces during the early-May retreat. The destruction therefore removed relatively little undamaged operational strength. It also reduced the Allies' disposal burden, since even worn-out or non-operational boats had to be taken away from Germany. Disarmament required preventing their reactivation or use in a last-minute escape, regardless of their immediate combat value.

Why Regenbogen made Allied disarmament easier
Most German-scuttled submarines were home boats, and destroying them reduced the number the Allies would otherwise have had to secure and remove.
