Why pyramids recur across ancient societies

A broad base and successively smaller levels make pyramids stable structures that ancient builders could construct with the technology available to them.

Notes

Ancient builders had the intelligence and skill to construct pyramids. A broad base supports successive levels that become smaller as the structure rises. That form is stable and comparatively practical with ancient building methods. A skyscraper would pose a much harder problem with the same technology.
