Why naval technology periods have debatable boundaries

Transition and stabilization are useful historical concepts, but the overlap between old and new ships makes their exact boundaries matters of interpretation.

Notes

Technological history rarely divides into neat blocks in which one warship type immediately replaces another. Older vessels can remain useful in secondary roles while newer designs redefine the leading edge, so transition and stabilization overlap in service. Historians can agree that a broad transformation occurred while still debating when its decisive phase began or ended. The same distinction can be applied to other periods of naval and technological history without treating the boundaries as fixed dates.
