Chapter · 6:17-7:48

Why Italy selected 135 mm guns

The 135 mm weapon promised heavier shells and useful elevation, while a Tribal-class destroyer would probably retain the advantage in volume of fire.

Notes

The British Tribal class provides a benchmark for what four 135 mm guns could achieve. A Tribal would probably retain the volume-of-fire advantage, especially because the Italian destroyer still lacked armour. The new weapon offered heavier shells that could threaten light cruisers, and its single mounting allowed greater elevation for anti-aircraft fire. Related guns were intended for Italian battleships, the Capitani Romani cruisers, and the carrier Aquila. The choice joined several programmes around one weapon family, though the comparison remains hypothetical because the destroyers never entered service.
