Why did some Italian cruisers survive into postwar service?
Short answerItaly's 1943 switch to the Allied side helped preserve part of the fleet; Italy retained some ships, while others passed to Allied powers in the settlement.
NotesItaly's 1943 change of sides was a crucial reason some cruisers remained available after the war. By the conflict's end, Italian forces had fought alongside the Allies rather than remaining an enemy through 1945. Italy was therefore allowed to retain part of its surviving fleet, while other ships were transferred under the postwar settlement. A Duca d'Aosta-class cruiser passing to the Soviet Union illustrates that survival did not necessarily mean continued Italian ownership.
