Why are there fewer cruiser museums than battleship, carrier, or destroyer museums?
Short answerCruisers faded gradually and were still in service, so their disappearance was not recognised early enough.
NotesPlanners still expected cruisers to remain useful when many preservation decisions were made. HMS Belfast became a museum while the Royal Navy still had cruisers in service and more entering the fleet. Their decline was gradual, so there was no single moment when the type appeared to be disappearing. By the time the gap was obvious, fewer ships remained available to preserve.
