Why were Type 15, Type 16, and proposed conversion frigates not given their own class names?
Short answerBuilt conversions retained the identities of their original classes, while unbuilt proposals never reached the point of becoming named ship classes.
NotesA design type is different from a newly built ship class. Type 15 and Type 16 frigates were conversions of existing destroyers, so their hulls already belonged to named classes. Giving the conversion a separate class identity would obscure that lineage. Proposed types that never reached construction likewise lacked the built ships needed to establish a conventional class name.
