Why Britain and Japan pursued night fighting for different reasons

British frustration with German fleets sheltering in harbour and escaping at night is contrasted with Japan's interest in using darkness to improve attrition.

Notes

Wartime frustrations are offered as an explanation for later naval priorities. The Royal Navy's interest in harbour attacks followed its experience of the German fleet remaining in port during the previous war. German escape at night also gave Britain a reason to improve its own night fighting. Japanese interest is described as serving a different purpose: making an attritional campaign more effective before the main fleet battle.
