Why Britain preserved so few old warships

Successive generations assumed new ships made the old ones unnecessary, so even survivable historic hulls were scrapped.

Question

Why was HMS Africa not preserved, and why did Britain save so few historic warships?

Short answer

Successive generations assumed new ships made the old ones unnecessary, so even survivable historic hulls were scrapped.

Notes

Preservation was rarely built into naval planning because the navy expected to replace old ships with new ones. A historic hull still occupied space and required money at a time when attention centered on the next fleet. One surviving third rate remained afloat after the Second World War and was still scrapped. That example shows how little age or rarity could matter without an institution committed to preservation. HMS Africa followed the normal path of disposal rather than becoming an exceptional museum ship.
