Why ramming the iceberg was not a simple answer

The familiar suggestion that Titanic should have hit the iceberg bow-on is tested against the ship's actual protective arrangements.

Question

Would Titanic have survived if it had struck the iceberg bow-on?

Short answer

Not necessarily; without a modern collision bulkhead, a bow-on strike could have caused rapid catastrophic damage rather than a controlled forward flood.

Notes

Later ships may have a collision bulkhead designed to isolate forward damage, but Titanic did not have the same protective margin. In this assessment, a bow-on impact could have crushed the ship's forward structure. Concentrating the collision into the bow does not automatically mean that only one or two safe compartments flood. A modern design feature cannot be assumed to have protected a ship built in 1912.
