Thomas Whitcombe tried to paint naval events as close to their occurrence as he could and sought accurate accounts from participants. Those accounts help explain the interest in his battle scenes as historical sources. His paintings remain reconstructions shaped by an artist's choices. Some reproductions shown here have also been cropped to fit the slides, so their boundaries differ from those of the original canvases.
