Would the Allies attempt to capture Taiwan?
Short answerOnly if Japanese forces there threatened the campaign; otherwise the Allies could bypass and isolate the island.
NotesTaiwan is an operational problem rather than an automatic objective. Japanese air, naval, or reconnaissance activity from the island could make capture or neutralization necessary. If the garrison cannot interfere with Allied sea control, however, blockade and bypassing can leave it isolated. Avoiding an unnecessary landing preserves amphibious forces for Hong Kong and the campaign's main effort against Japanese sea power.
