Question

What does the term type mean when discussing warships?

Short answer

It can mean a related design grouping or a broad vessel category such as frigate, destroyer, or cruiser, depending on context.

Notes

The word type operates at more than one level in naval discussion. It can identify a grouping of related vessels, in which case it functions much like class. It can also mean the broader category to which a ship belongs, such as frigate, destroyer, or cruiser. Its immediate context determines which meaning applies.
