What navies did with guns from scrapped capital ships

Heavy guns could return to a common reserve pool, become coastal artillery, or be scrapped depending on whether the weapon type remained in service.

Question

What happened to the big guns when capital ships were scrapped?

Short answer

They could be stored as replacements for surviving ships, reused in coastal forts, or scrapped if no continuing requirement justified keeping them.

Notes

Scrapping a battleship did not automatically destroy every gun with the hull. If other ships still used the same weapon, serviceable barrels and mount components could return to the replacement pool. Obsolete or surplus guns might instead be broken up. A further option was to reuse the weapons in land-based coastal forts, extending their military life after the ship itself disappeared.
