What does "largest naval battle" mean?

Ship numbers, vessel types, personnel, displacement, and the boundaries of a battle produce different contenders for the largest naval engagement.

Notes

Claims about the largest naval battle depend on what is counted. Salamis is a contender by ship count, but the comparison with Yamen changes when many of Yamen's vessels were not warships. Lake Poyang raises the problem of including land troops and forces arriving over a prolonged engagement. Jutland is offered for the displacement of ships involved and the Philippine Sea for carrier warfare. Leyte Gulf has competing claims based on the combined forces, ships sunk, and the area covered by its component battles. Treating several actions over a wide area as one battle then raises the question of whether the Battle of the Atlantic should qualify, despite usually being classified as a campaign.
