The Weymouths retained the protected-cruiser hull concept but carried a much heavier uniform battery of eight 50-calibre 6-inch guns. One gun sat forward, one aft, and six occupied side positions, with two raised to improve forward fire. This produced three guns ahead and five on the broadside. Secondary accounts describe five-gun fire astern, but no first-hand example is cited in the passage, so that firing arc remains uncertain.
