An unopposed landing still produces trench-foot casualties

Wet boots and prolonged exposure remove fourteen men from a 94-strong company even though enemy ground forces do not heavily contest the landing.

Notes

Company Sergeant Major Peter John Rickens of B Company, 2 Para recalls that his soldiers remained wet for days and rotated a second pair of socks under their armpits to dry them. Fourteen of ninety-four men were lost temporarily to immersion or trench foot in the first week. Argentine ground troops did not heavily oppose the landing itself, but wet boots and exposure still degraded the landed force. The example shows how terrain, weather, clothing, and foot care can inflict serious attrition during an amphibious operation without direct enemy fire.
