The account follows an unruly alderman's son who left Trondheim at fourteen and went to Copenhagen seeking a naval career. When a cadetship did not immediately appear, Wessel cultivated a connection with the king's chaplain and gained seagoing experience on a West Indies voyage. That experience and royal patronage eventually opened the cadet route, leading to his commission as a second lieutenant in July 1711. His later rise from junior officer to vice admiral in only nine years reflected exceptional ability, wartime expansion, and a Danish-Norwegian Navy short of capable independent commanders.
