Wellington argues for peace with the United States

A proposed North American command reveals Wellington's opposition to continuing the War of 1812 and his insistence on freedom to negotiate.

Notes

With Wellington's safety in Paris under review, Lord Liverpool considered sending him to North America to end the unpopular war with the United States. Wellington would go only under explicit orders and only if he were free to negotiate. He had long opposed the conflict and did not accept that calls for peace required automatic support for further fighting. Wellington treated diplomacy as part of strategy rather than assuming that another battlefield victory was the only useful outcome.
