Some yards had room to build a more ambitious destroyer than the emergency type but lacked capacity for a Battle. The Weapon design was intended to use that intermediate capacity. Its fit included twin 4-inch gun mountings, staggered twin 40 mm Bofors, provision for two quintuple torpedo banks and a pair of Squid mortars. The ships did not begin commissioning until 1947, after the wartime need that had justified the design.
