Could an earlier Weapon class have covered delays to the Battles?

An earlier Weapon programme might have filled a gap while the Battles waited for equipment. The Navy gave priority to other classes.

Notes

A faster start and build might have made the Weapon class useful while Battle-class deliveries waited on equipment such as Mark 37 fire control. The Navy concentrated on the Battle and C classes, leaving the Weapons without a strong sponsor to press their construction forward. The claimed earlier start of the Weapon programme therefore did not translate into earlier service. Seven Battles commissioned and one reached action with the British Pacific Fleet before the war ended, while no Weapon had done so.
