The Western Approaches Tactical Unit formed part of a larger anti-submarine system rather than operating as an isolated wargaming experiment. Its tactical work drew on the Admiralty's submarine tracking and intelligence organizations, and its conclusions fed back into operational decisions. A full organizational history would trace information and personnel across those connected bodies, including the Wrens who moved between them. This staff work belongs beside the ships and battles in any account of the Atlantic campaign.
