Washington becomes HMS Princess of Orange

A ship named for George Washington acquires an Orangist identity after British capture, turning its name into a record of regime change.

Notes

Washington was a Batavian warship named for the American republican leader. It is unclear whether the vessel had previously carried an Orangist name or had been newly ordered by the republic. After the British captured the ship, the Royal Navy renamed it HMS Princess of Orange and took it into service. The prize name reversed the vessel's revolutionary symbolism without changing the hull.
