Deutschland’s raiding role and gun arrangement under stronger opposition

A stronger world battle fleet raises doubts about Deutschland’s long-range role and prompts criticism of its divided gun battery.

Notes

If Germany follows a broadly similar political trajectory, Deutschland faces G3s, Lexingtons, Amagis and their successors. Its long-range raiding role makes little sense against that opposition in this assessment, and coastal defence is a suggested alternative. Its six 11-inch guns in two separated triple turrets resemble the pre-dreadnoughts being replaced. Concentrating the armament forward is proposed as a better way to use those six guns and improve fire control. The preferred minimum useful battery is nine 11-inch guns. Treaty constraints help explain the historical choice, while leaving room for criticism of the arrangement.
