From wartime flexibility to peacetime discipline

The experience of hostilities-only ratings on HMS Javelin illustrates why the return of peacetime routines could feel like an abrupt tightening of discipline.

Notes

HMS Javelin in 1945 illustrates the friction that arose when hostilities-only ratings met the return of peacetime regulation. Sailors accustomed to wartime flexibility faced more attention to dress, polish, and formal routines once immediate combat demands receded. The change had an operational rationale: in peace a navy must preserve both equipment and the skills needed for a future war. That means less time using matériel and more time maintaining it, even when crews interpret the change as needless restriction. Postwar discipline problems could therefore grow from institutional transition rather than simple disloyalty.
