Hull shortages pushed scout cruisers into unsuitable wartime jobs

The surviving class performed well with fast mobile forces, but too few modern cruisers forced it into bombardment and battle-force duties.

Notes

The class entered service under doctrine substantially different from the assumptions that had produced it. Its wartime record owed much to crews and professionals who extracted useful service from ships that were often asked to do the wrong jobs. The Northamptons performed best with fast, mobile task groups where scouting speed and flagship capacity still mattered, and worst when held near defended coasts or used for bombardment. Because the Navy never had enough modern fighting cruisers, it could not reserve these older scouts for their intended role and had to accept the resulting risk.
