Why ASW skill could not spread instantly

A mass wartime navy needed years to train sonar operators, weapons teams, officers, and instructors, so fair comparisons should measure equal time in combat.

Notes

Operational lessons had to spread through fleets employing tens of thousands of people in specialized jobs. An illustrative training cycle starts with a thousand people learning a new standard and then carrying it to their colleagues while another group receives further instruction. Sonar operators, watch officers, weapons officers, and NCOs all needed compatible skills for an ASW attack to work. Learning quickly at headquarters did not immediately produce enough trained people in every ship. Comparing US Navy ASW in 1944 with Royal Navy ASW around 1942 places each at roughly three years into its war and makes that training interval visible.
