How Warspite became the Royal Navy's Grand Old Lady

Warspite's thirty-year career and unusual flagship reputation explain why the Jutland veteran became the Royal Navy's Grand Old Lady.

Notes

Commissioned in March 1915 and retained until February 1945, Warspite served as a front-line capital ship across both world wars. That unusually long career made her a recurring reference point in naval-history teaching and prompted a proposed study of interwar deterrence. During the 1920s and 1930s, Warspite became the Royal Navy's Mediterranean and North Atlantic presence ship while Hood made the more distant prestige cruises. She had not been designed as the class flagship, yet repeated command service and her association with Andrew Cunningham gave her a status that newer capital ships did not displace. The Grand Old Lady nickname reflected this institutional reputation before later refits and operations reinforced it.
