From about 1935, new destroyers, sloops, cruisers, and other warships were prepared for later radar installations. The preparation did not always mean a finished operator compartment; it meant excess electrical generation, space and weight allowances, and provision for additional generators. Those choices explain why wartime electronics could be installed more quickly than an entirely improvised retrofit would allow.
