Chapter ยท 7:36-19:58

Reading science-fiction fleets through naval roles

Cruisers, battleships, and carriers provide a role-based test for fictional ships whose screen size or prestige can obscure what they are built to do.

Notes

The opening framework classifies ships by mission, endurance, and fleet employment. Britain's worldwide deployments put cruisers on routine exploration, patrol, and presence work, while battleships concentrated on fleet battle. Pre-treaty armoured cruisers could be longer or larger than battleships because long-range service demanded fuel and stores. The Enterprise therefore behaves like a cruiser even when television presents it as the fleet's star ship. The Dominion War exposes the other side of this role-based fleet: Starfleet produces small combat ships such as Defiant, yet its expected battleships never appear on screen.
