What Age of Sail warship ratings measured

Gun-count classifications separated ships by size and role, while crew quality and tactical circumstances still shaped combat performance.

Notes

Age of Sail ratings primarily described a ship's size and armament. Crew skill and tactical circumstances remained central to fighting quality, so a well-handled third rate could theoretically defeat a poorly handled first rate. First rates were needed to meet enemy first rates, while second rates added heavy force. Governments that maintained balanced fleets invested consistently over long periods and supported several kinds of warship. The more numerous third rates gave battle fleets practical strength in numbers, with smaller rates filling other roles.
