A battleship's internal subdivision resembles a dense honeycomb of relatively small structural cells. That extra structure supports armor and helps the hull absorb damage and additional weight. Cruiser-derived designs use larger cells to save weight for speed, endurance, and range. Because Renown and Repulse grew from a battleship design, they could accept deeper reconstruction more readily than the more cruiser-oriented Hood.
