A new warship can introduce unfamiliar technology while retaining a shape that people recognize as powerful. Warrior and Black Prince were British responses to the earlier French Gloire. Gloire's appearance was in some respects closer to later warship styling, yet Warrior's more traditional form helped it look familiar and imposing. Armour, machinery, speed, and new guns combined technical change with that recognizable form. The comparison then turns to Sovremenny-class destroyers, whose conspicuous missiles and guns could suggest that capabilities had been added piecemeal. Cleaner American lines conveyed a different impression of deliberate design. These are interpretations of how ships communicate presence and confidence in peacetime, rather than a ranking of their combat power.

A successful warship must fit and break the mold
Warship design has to look recognizable enough to communicate confidence while introducing enough change to establish a technical and strategic lead.
