Warrior made new technology look like familiar power

Warrior's familiar frigate appearance helped Britain turn a bundle of new technologies into an immediately convincing signal of naval dominance.

Notes

The Admiralty needed a warship that would control the political narrative as well as perform at sea. La Gloire actually carried slightly thicker armor, 4.7 inches against Warrior's 4.5, and several of her features pointed more clearly toward later ironclads. Warrior wrapped iron construction, steam power, armor, and heavy guns in a frigate form observers already understood. Her 9,284-ton displacement and rapid British follow-on construction magnified the effect. The aim was to make British superiority look convincing enough that rivals would avoid a war whose cost and outcome remained unpredictable.
