HMS Warrior and HMS Black Prince provide the historical example for a discussion of technological deterrence. Their arrival is linked here to French concern about British naval strength and the search for a response. In this interpretation, the later Jeune École prolonged the disadvantage by encouraging ineffective choices. The result therefore depended on the rival's decisions as well as Britain's ships. A favourable historical example cannot by itself establish that a new generation of weapons will prevent future wars.
