Command confidence and overconfidence aboard Warrior

Granger assigns his strongest colleague to coordinate the wider defence while relying on a heroic reputation that also feeds his overconfidence.

Notes

Granger sends Commander Proctor to coordinate the planetary forces because her experience will be most useful there, despite his reluctance to fight without her aboard Warrior. She challenges his confidence by pointing out that the approaching force is much larger than the enemy in their earlier battle. He answers that New Dublin also has stronger defences. Privately, his survival of previous disasters has left him convinced that he will win, and he recognizes Proctor's concern that this confidence has become excessive. His expectation of victory extends to accepting the enemy's complete extermination. He nevertheless cultivates his heroic reputation because his people respond to it with better performance. The scene leaves a tension between the confidence that sustains a force and the overconfidence that can distort its commander's judgment.
