Laundry, kit lockers, and separate crew identities

Laundry equipment and numbered kit storage organized life aboard Warrior, while separate bathrooms reflected the division between sailors and engineers.

Notes

Warrior's small arms changed over time, with bolt-action rifles beginning to appear later in her career. Other changes affected the crew's everyday life: bathrooms included mangles for squeezing water from clothes and a hand-operated arrangement that could wash them with soap and water. Engineers had separate facilities from sailors working above decks. Their different work helped sustain an occupational rivalry, expressed through jokes about oily engineers and supposedly soft sailors. Numbered lockers and bags assigned each man a place for clothing and possessions. A number could be prepared before a new crew member arrived, while his name could be added once his identity was known. These stores lay low in the ship, where belongings would have little chance of surviving serious flooding.
