Why Warrior reset warship development

HMS Warrior combined frigate classification, battleship force, and sustained British investment in a break comparable to HMS Dreadnought.

Notes

Warrior brought battleship capability to a ship classified as a frigate. That combination disrupted older categories and encouraged the use of cruiser for other roles. She remained the equal of new rivals for roughly seven years and left front-line battleship service only after about a decade. Her effect on warship development invites comparison with HMS Dreadnought. British naval dominance also required continued investment: victory in the Napoleonic Wars created an opening, and subsequent spending maintained it.
