Chapter · 55:30-59:01

Warrant officers keep enormous starships running

The ship's master and a network of senior specialists turn command decisions into navigation, gunnery, supply, and internal order.

Notes

The ship's master is the senior warrant officer and an experienced troubleshooter responsible for navigation, logs, attitude control, hangars, stores, and supplies. A master gunner oversees the battery while gun captains control individual weapons and the master of ordnance manages ammunition. The master-at-arms maintains internal order and the ship's fighting personnel through subordinate sergeants-at-arms. Surgeons and the high factotum add medical care, trade negotiations, complex records, bribes, and threats to the ship's specialist work. Boatswains and differently named local equivalents fill out the network, showing that a vessel's daily effectiveness rests on deep enlisted and warrant-officer expertise rather than commissioned command alone.
