Warenne's Scottish service and royal rewards

Warenne's support for Edward II in Scotland shows how limited forces, reluctant magnates, border campaigning, and grants of land sustained medieval war.

Notes

When Edward II summoned an army in 1310, most earls avoided serving beside Gaveston and supplied only their legal minimum, leaving Warenne and Gloucester as the principal earls who answered. Warenne held a border position, campaigned around Selkirk, and remained in Scotland with knights and men-at-arms into 1311. Edward rewarded that loyalty with manors, the honor and forest of High Peak, and eventually remission of its annual payment. Medieval campaigning depended on aristocratic cooperation, and the crown used patronage to secure it.
