Why Warenne stayed away from Bannockburn

Warenne and Arundel challenged the summons and parliamentary authority for Edward II's 1314 campaign, while a marriage dispute added a personal motive for refusing service.

Notes

John de Warenne and Edmund FitzAlan did not join the campaign that ended at Bannockburn, arguing that they had not been summoned correctly and that Parliament had not sanctioned the expedition. The taxation objection appears weak because Edward II had secured money for the campaign. Warenne's effort to annul his marriage to Edward's niece Joan of Bar offered a more personal source of tension. Formal constitutional arguments and private interests could both shape military attendance.
