Would the survival of Courageous and Glorious shorten the Second World War?
Short answerNot necessarily by much in Europe, but it could reduce Allied losses and limit Japanese expansion in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.
NotesThe counterfactual does not move D-Day forward simply because Britain retains two carriers; a cross-Channel invasion still depends on American participation and a long buildup. The larger effect lies in the Far East, where a stronger Malaya and Singapore position can deny Japan bases and resources. That in turn could avert or reshape the Indian Ocean raid and improve links with resistance forces in the Netherlands East Indies. The war may remain similar in length while becoming less costly and geographically less favourable to Japan.
