Wakatake repeats the small destroyer formula

Wakatake retained a small hull and limited range, while the comparison with Momi shows how machinery requirements could erase hoped-for crew savings.

Notes

Wakatake continued second-class destroyer construction between 1921 and 1923. Its armament included three 4.7-inch guns, four 21-inch torpedo tubes, two 7.7 mm antiaircraft machine guns and capacity for 20 mines. Wakatake's quoted complement is 110. Momi's projected crew is given as 107, followed by a figure of 110 around completion. Its boilers required additional personnel, raising the complement to roughly 148. Individual Momi figures remain debatable because the class used several boiler designs. Mitsubishi developed Wakatake's turbine installation from a Parsons design it had acquired. The stated range remained about 3,000 nautical miles at 15 knots.
